The role of university extension in promoting gender equity

Abstract

Structural inequalities affect women's access to and retention in higher education, especially in Brazil, where social markers such as gender, race, and class still strongly influence academic trajectories. This study aims to understand, based on the literature, how university extension programs can promote gender equity and contribute to the critical education of students. The methodology adopted was a systematic literature review in the SciELO database, using the descriptors “gender” and “university extension,” filtered for publications in Portuguese, Brazilian, and from the last five years. After screening, four articles were selected and analyzed. The results highlight extension projects focused on supporting women in vulnerable situations, promoting mental health, valuing marginalized knowledge, and encouraging female participation in fields such as engineering. It is concluded that extension can serve as a bridge between university and community, fostering inclusion and social justice.
