With the launch of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Decade of Ocean Science, the challenge of incorporating Ocean Literacy in Brazil and UN member countries has been undertaken. This movement aims to disseminate knowledge about the Ocean, based on seven principles and 44 concepts, emphasizing that it is unique and essential for life on Earth. An effective way to expand this knowledge is through formal education. Thus, during the Curricular Extension Activities (ACE) of the Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences at UFAL, Maceió, AL, an 8-hour course on Ocean Literacy was proposed, mediated by UFAL students for 66 public school teachers from all curricular subjects. After the training, some participants reported that, although initially unmotivated, they recognized the importance of the topic during the course. These accounts highlight the relevance of university extension programs in connecting science to society and demonstrate that investing in formal education and continuous teacher training is essential to achieving the goals of the Decade of Ocean Science.
